Healthy Lincoln County, a Healthy Maine Partnership (HMP), was originally called the TLC for Life Coalition and was organized in the fall of 2000 under a grant from the Maine Dept. of Health funded by the proceeds of the master tobacco settlement agreement.

Our Mission: In Partnership with the community, Healthy Lincoln County's mission is to:
• Promote full access to the community regardless of location and socio-economic status.
• Encourage the development of community while maintaining the character of Midcoast Maine.
• Support accessible and affordable health care, childcare, housing and healthy lifestyle choices.
• Foster open communication connecting diverse populations and all generations.
• Promote good economic health.

Our Vision: A Healthy and Thriving Lincoln County Community.

countyGeographic Area:
Healthy Lincoln County covers all nineteen communities in Lincoln County. These includes Alna, Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Bremen, Bristol, Damariscotta, Dresden, Edgecomb, Jefferson, Monhegan, Newcastle, Nobleboro, Somerville, South Bristol, Southport, Waldoboro, Westport, Whitefield, and Wiscasset.

The Healthy Maine Partnership program was organized in the fall of 2000 to help Mainers become more healthy by building grass roots coalitions led by one full time community partnership director and a school health coordinator. The focus is reducing tobacco use, and encouraging better nutrition and a more active lifestyle. A variety of initiatives were successfully accomplished by our coalition during the six years of the grant. These included creating tobacco free zones around public buildings, making school grounds and playing fields tobacco free, reducing tobacco use by minors, providing more access to opportunities for physical activity, replacing junk foods in vending machines with healthy choices, helping local businesses create worksite wellness programs, etc.

Additional major accomplishments of this coalition include the annual mid-winter walking event co-sponsored by Miles Health Care and local business organizations, the printing of a Physical Activity Guide to Lincoln County and a Healthy Eating Guide both of which were distributed widely throughout the county.

The first grant ran for five years with a one year extension and ended June 30, 2007. The current grant is for three years and now includes chronic disease, specifically diabetes, asthma and cancer, as well as substance abuse in addition to the tobacco, physical activity and nutrition initiatives. The number of HMP’s statewide has been reduced to 28. We are now part of the Midcoast District encompassing Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox and Waldo Counties. This is one of eight districts and is part of Maine’s new health infrastructure.

Healthy Lincoln County relies heavily on volunteers from the community to help implement its initiatives. If you would like more information on how youcan help us accomplish our goals and would consider being a volunteer please call Will Monsell at 563-6123. We would be glad to hear from you.
